The Easter Long Weekend has become a staple in the Australian public holiday calendar. Even though many families may not celebrate Easter, Australians will take advantage of these extra public holidays as a time to come together with friends and family. And why not?! Down under it is Autumn and that usually means great weather!

1. Make hot cross buns

A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet fruit bun that is traditionally enjoyed on Good Friday. These sweet, spiced buns are typically made with a dough infused with cinnamon, nutmeg, and sometimes raisins or currants, giving them a fragrant and flavourful taste. They are available in most supermarkets and are delicious when toasted!

2. Take a trip to the coast

With winter fast approaching, it is the perfect time to take a small trip to the coast to soak up all the sun while you still you can! With so many beaches, it can be hard to know where to start. The Gold Coast is a top spot if you are wanting to chill at the beach combined with some adventure at a theme park! Speak to the team at Reception for other local tips in your state.

3. Be entertained under the stars!

In Australia we are blessed with great weather in Autumn. Whilst the days are getting shorter, these Autumn evenings make the ideal opportunity to relax outdoors, catch the sunset and you could even bring some instruments or set up your own movie to enjoy into the evening.  Keep in mind, the parks can get chilly once the sun goes down, so be prepared and pack a jumper just in case! Also, to keep everything under budget make sure you ‘Bring Your Own’ (BYO) food and drinks. So grab a bunch of friends for a chillaxed* night under the stars!

4. Catch up on your culture

Sometimes a bit of knowledge other than your studies is healthy for your own academic wellbeing. The long weekend offers the opportunity to perfect your study/life balance. No doubt all semester you’ve been busy studying, but did you know by scheduling in some free time this makes you much more likely to use it effectively.

So, plan ahead and book in that trip to the museum or the art gallery. Take your time. Spend all afternoon if you like taking in an amazing painting or a weird statue, as this will keep your mind fresh for when you return to your studies. Don’t forget, the majority of the museums and galleries are free or offer student discounts, so don’t forget your student card.

Aussie Easter Fact: The Easter Bunny vs The Easter Bilby

The Bilby, is a protected small native mammal with large rabbit like ears and is an important part of traditional indigenous culture in the deserts of Central Australia. Sadly, with changes to their natural habitat and competition with introduced animals (like the rabbit) numbers have reduced dramatically. To celebrate an Australian Easter many are opting to give a chocolate Bilby – instead of the traditional rabbit – an introduced pest, that has caused damage to the native habitat.
