BEE THE CHANGE!

Bees and beekeeping have been around for centuries, and without them, our ecosystem would suffer drastically. Scape is thrilled to be part of the solution by introducing beekeeping to help protect and promote a healthy environment. In our mission to promote natural pollination and protect bees from mite infestation, we have partnered with some of the most esteemed beekeeping companies in the country.

OUR BEEHIVES

SYDNEY

The honey harvest at Scape Redfern has been buzzing with excitement and success! Since welcoming the bees, we've proudly gathered over 340 kg of golden honey and 20 kg of pure beeswax. This bounty has been put to great use: the honey enhances the delicious meals served at Scape Eats, while the beeswax has been carefully crafted into luxurious scented balms. Students have also been getting in on the action through our hands-on lip balm-making workshops, using our very own homegrown beeswax. We're thrilled to announce that Rooftop Bees will now be taking the reins in managing the Redfern hives, promising an even more abundant and productive year ahead for both our bees and our harvest.

MELBOURNE

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting urban pollination and keeping our gardens vibrant, we’re always ready to adapt and help our buzzing friends thrive. Last season, Victorian beekeepers have faced a sting in the tail; a particularly wet spring brought an abundance of pollen but not enough nectar, meaning no honey harvest so far. But in true Scape spirit, we’re ready to give our bees a fresh start! The hives that were once at Scape Lincoln College, including two that were struggling, have been relocated, and in their place, we’re excited to welcome brand-new hives at Scape Leicester, provided by the amazing team at Rooftop Bees! These new hives will be set up on level 8 in early October, where we’re confident they’ll thrive in their new environment. To welcome the bees to their new home, we’ll be hosting a special ceremony.

BRISBANE

At Scape South Bank, we have partnered with Gary’s Honey to create a buzzing haven for our local bees, bringing a touch of nature right to our residents’ doorsteps! We have installed four hives filled with European honeybees on the 13th-floor balcony, along with a native beehive nestled in the garden. Now, residents can enjoy watching these busy bees’ flit and flutter from the comfort of their own home, soaking in the beauty of nature in action. We are thrilled to have Gary’s Honey on board, sharing their expertise and passion for our local bees. And the sweetest part? We have harvested over 310 Kg of honey since the four hives were introduced early in 2023! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our little rooftop workers and the delicious treats they’ll bring us.

ADELAIDE

The buzzing bee community at Scape in Adelaide is now proudly managed by Glen Francis from Bees Please, and we're excited to embark on this new partnership. Over the past two seasons, our diligent bees have helped us harvest 42 Kg of honey, showcasing the incredible results of their hard work. Our hives house a unique blend of Carniolan bees, a resilient species native to Eastern Europe. Under ideal conditions, these remarkable pollinators can produce up to 50 Kg of multi-flora honey each year! As we begin this new chapter with Bees Please, we look forward to a fruitful journey and the sweet rewards that lie ahead.
